Compared to everywhere else in the world our internet just seems ridiculously expensive and really slow. Why is that? When are we going to catch up to everyone else?

Because you’re at the other end of the world.
There are giant undersea cables, and Australia’s cables route to Asia before bouncing to the US and Europe. Each step adds latency, hence it’s slow.
That’s because Broadband in Australia is expensive to set up, and we haven’t got the resources to make it as fast as our US and Japan counter parts.
And second, we’re pretty isolated from America, and we rely on undersea cables to connect to the rest of the world.
Australia is the biggest continent in the world, but we also have a relatively small population (just a bit over 20 million) for its land size. At the end, telecommunication companies pay a high premium to set up the infrastructure on this big piece of land, but they cannot reap the same amount of reward due to a small population which produces small demand.
take it upon yourself to fix the problem, or elevate it to the right people.
Necessity breeds invention (or something like that)
